This Episode covers

  • Why I’ve upgraded most of my equipment
  • 6 Hockey Equipment Shopping Tips
  • The order I replaced my equipment
  • Brand and model numbers, plus the prices of what I purchased
  • Total Price of all my equipment (Please don’t tell my wife!)

What is different about equipment today? It’s more comfortable, gives better protection, lighter weight and offers increased performance.

Coach Jeremy of How To Hockey – Talking old gear and new gear with Mark Messier

6 Hockey Equipment Shopping Tips

1. Google: “How to Properly Fit Hockey Equipment YouTube”
“How to Properly Fit Hockey Shoulder Pads YouTube” (this can be done for any piece to gear)

2. Ask your hockey friends what stores they shop at. Call or go to an ice arena to see who they recommend. Some rinks have their own Pro Shops. If you don’t feel comfortable shopping alone, ask a hockey friend if they could go shopping with you.

3. Go to the hockey stores website. Sign up for their FREE newsletter, so you get emails with discounts. Many of the sites have Sale Codes to save you money immediately. If you’re going to a stores physical location, call them to see if they will match their website prices.

4. Before purchasing anything at a store, ask if they have a Rewards Program. Some programs are free and you get discounts after spending a certain amount of money (Perani’s Hockey World and Play It Again Sports). Others you pay to join, but you get discounts immediately (Total Hockey – Pure Hockey).
If you are looking to purchase all new equipment (Beginners), ask them if they will give you a discount if you buy all the equipment the same time. Buying everything at one store will make sure all your equipment fits properly, gives you good protection and is comfortable.

5. Don’t buy the same skates your favorite NHL Player or friend wears. The most important thing is how the skates fit you.
I made this mistake decades ago.

6. If you don’t want to get all new equipment, check Play It Again Sports, Hockey Stores, Ice Arena’s, friends and online ads. If possible, BUY NEW skates and a NEW helmet.

Check AgelessHockey.com/Equipment for photos of my old/new equipment, plus the brand & model number of my new equipment.

Here is the order I replaced my equipment.

  1. Equipment Bag (Too Heavy)
    Bauer S 14 Premium (Large 40”) Wheeled Bag = $77
  2. Elbow pads (Slipping down my arms)
    CCM 2052 Tacks = $35
  3. Skates (cracked blade holder / 25 years old)
    Bauer Supreme S180 = $450

  4. Soakers (Blade protectors)
    $10
  5. Shoulder pads (bruised/cracked ribs – old ones didn’t protect much)
    Easton Synergy 60 = $65
  6. Shin guards (Players were telling me I was going to get hurt)
    CCM Tacks 2052 = $54
  7. Sticks (Players were telling me the new sticks are better than my wooden sticks)
Warrior Covert QR Pro Grip – Sr. = $79

  8. Helmet and Cage (concussion – helmet cracked when I hit the ice)
    Helmet: Bauer IMS 11.0 = $144
Cage (facemask): Bauer Profile III = $45
NOTE: Also wear a mouth guard
  9. Pants (Old pants didn’t have much protection)
    CCM Tacks 5092 = $90
    Suspenders = $10
  10. Gloves (I did not replace these)
Hespeler Classic RTX = $40 (purchased in 2000)

Total = $1,040 (This is a lot of money. You’ll have to decide if you want to upgrade your old equipment.)

Remember to always check your equipment after you play to make sure nothing is wrong with it. Also take your equipment out of the bag so it can dry.

I’m hope this episode will be helpful to you when you purchase hockey equipment.
